Mid-Size Garden Tool Shed 2.58x2.07M Sliding Door

Choosing the Right Tool Storage Shed for Your Backyard

A tool storage shed is one of those purchases where getting the size wrong is expensive twice — once when you buy it, and again when you replace it two years later because it was never big enough. Here's how to think about it properly before you buy.

Start with what's actually going in it

Don't size the shed to what you own today — size it to what you'll own in three years. Mowers, whipper snippers, and bikes all seem to multiply. If you're between two sizes, go up.

Small (under 1.5m wide)

Good for a compact tool kit, a whipper snipper, and general garden gear. Ideal if space is tight or you just need somewhere dry to lock away hand tools and chemicals, away from the house.

Medium (around 2–2.6m wide)

This is the sweet spot for most backyards — enough room for a mower, tools, garden gear, and some general storage, without taking over the yard. Look for a sliding door on this size; it saves swing clearance in tighter spots.

Large (3m+ wide)

Once you're storing a ride-on mower, workshop bench, or gear for multiple hobbies, you're in this bracket. These often come with a metal base included, which is worth having — it keeps the floor off the ground and stops moisture creeping in from underneath.

Things people forget to check

  • Door type. Sliding doors need less clearance than hinged doors — important if the shed is going against a fence line.
  • Base included or not. If a base isn't included, budget for pavers or a concrete pad, otherwise moisture and pests become an issue fast.
  • Anchoring. Steel sheds need to be secured to the ground or a base, especially anywhere that gets strong wind — don't skip this step.
  • Council requirements. Some councils have size or setback rules for sheds — worth a quick check before you commit to the largest option.

Mostly storing garden gear?

If it's mowers, hoses, and outdoor tools rather than a full workshop, our backyard garden shed range is sized and priced specifically for that, so you're not paying for space you won't use.
