Garage Shelving Buying Guide: Sizing, Load Ratings and Layout
Garage shelving looks simple until you're standing in the aisle choosing between a dozen sizes and finishes. Get it right and the whole garage feels twice as big; get it wrong and you've got a wall of half-empty racks that still don't fit the mower. Here's how to choose properly.
Start with the wall, not the shelf
Measure the run of wall you're working with and the ceiling height before anything else. Shelving is cheap per metre of wall, so the goal is to use the full height — floor to near the ceiling — rather than buying short units and leaving a metre of dead air up top.
Depth matters more than people expect
Deeper shelves hold more but eat floor space and make it easy to lose things at the back. For general garage gear, a mid-depth unit is the sweet spot. Go deep only where you're storing genuinely bulky items like tubs and tyres.
Match the size to the job
A single tall unit suits a corner or a narrow wall. For a full garage wall, a wider unit — or a couple side by side — gives you a continuous run that's easier to organise by zone (garden gear here, paint and chemicals there, sports gear up top).
Think about load before you fill it
Every shelf has a rating, and it's usually quoted per shelf when evenly loaded. Heavy gear — batteries, tools, tins of paint — goes low; light and bulky goes high. Overloading one shelf is how units bow and eventually fail, so spread the weight. For a bigger workshop, a large unit gives you the shelves to do that properly.
