Your ute tray has three usable storage zones most people only use one of: under the tray, on the tray floor, and on the trailer tongue if you're towing. Used properly, all three together can hold a full trade kit without touching your actual load space.

Under the tray: fixed, lockable, out of the way

On the tray: trundle drawers for bulk gear

A trundle drawer system sits on the tray floor and slides out like a giant drawer, giving you full access to everything inside without having to climb up and dig through loose gear. It's the better choice when you're carrying bulkier items — power tools, larger equipment, dual-cab crew gear — that won't fit in an under-tray box. The trade-off is it does eat into your usable tray length, so it suits utes that aren't maxing out their load length daily.

On the trailer: tongue boxes for the stuff you forget

If you're towing regularly, a trailer tongue box is the most underused storage spot going. It's perfect for tie-downs, chains, tow gear, and the odds and ends you always seem to be missing right when you need them — kept separate from your main tool kit so they don't get buried.

Putting it together

Under-tray boxes: everyday hand tools, split left/right by type.
Trundle drawer: bulk items, larger tools, anything too big for the under-tray boxes.
Tongue box: towing gear, straps, recovery equipment — anything trailer-specific.

Keeping these zones dedicated to specific gear (rather than a bit of everything in each) is what actually saves time on site — you always know which spot to check first.
