How Much Weight Can Your Shelving Actually Hold?

“Holds up to 200kg” sounds reassuring until you realise it might mean per shelf, or across the whole unit, or only when the weight is spread just so. Load ratings trip a lot of people up, so here's how to read them properly before you pile it high.

Per shelf vs total capacity

Two numbers matter. The per-shelf rating is what one shelf carries; the total is what the whole unit carries. A five-shelf unit rated 175kg per shelf isn't a 875kg free-for-all — the frame has its own total limit, and both need respecting. When in doubt, treat the per-shelf figure as your working limit.

“Evenly distributed” is doing a lot of work

Ratings almost always assume the load is spread across the shelf. Put the same weight on one small spot — a heavy engine part, a single dense box — and you create a point load the shelf may not handle. Spread heavy items out, or sit them on a board to share the load across the shelf.

What actually affects strength

• Upright gauge. Thicker steel posts carry more — it's why heavier-duty units cost more.
• Beam and shelf support. More support points under a shelf mean less sag under load.
• Decking. A solid deck spreads weight better than widely spaced slats for small, heavy items.
• Assembly. A unit that's out of square or missing a brace loses a chunk of its rated strength.

A simple rule of thumb

Load heavy and dense low, light and bulky high, and keep a bit in reserve rather than loading to the exact limit. If a shelf starts to bow, that's your sign to redistribute — not to hope. For genuinely heavy gear, step up to a thicker-gauge, purpose-built unit rather than pushing a light one past its rating.
