Irrigation Setup 101: Matching Pump Pressure to Your Garden Size

A weak, patchy sprinkler system almost always comes down to one thing: the pump doesn't match the garden. Get the pressure and flow rate right for your area and layout, and irrigation stops being a daily chore.

Start with your garden's actual size and layout

A small garden bed watered by a single sprinkler needs far less flow than a property running multiple zones simultaneously. Map out how many sprinklers or drip lines need to run at once — that combined flow requirement is what your pump needs to deliver, not just the flow of a single outlet.

Pressure vs flow: know the difference

Pressure gets water to travel further and higher (important for sprinklers covering distance or elevated garden beds); flow rate is how much water moves per minute (important for covering larger areas or running multiple zones). A high-pressure pump with low flow will struggle to run several sprinklers at once, even if each individually sprays fine.

Tank water vs mains-fed irrigation

If you're pulling from a rainwater tank rather than mains pressure, you need a pump to generate both the pressure and flow that mains water normally provides automatically — undersizing here is the most common reason tank-fed irrigation disappoints compared to a mains-connected system.

Add a controller for hands-off watering

An auto pressure switch means the pump only runs when a tap or irrigation zone actually opens, rather than running continuously or needing manual switching — worth adding to any system that's used daily.

Protect the pump and controller too

Pumps, controllers, and fittings last a lot longer out of direct sun and rain. If you don't already have somewhere dry near the tap, a small garden equipment shed nearby makes servicing everything far easier than digging gear out from under a tarp.
