Submersible Water Pumps: When You Need One and How to Choose

Most water pump questions come down to one thing: is the pump above or below the water source? A submersible pump goes into the water itself, and that difference is what makes it the right (or wrong) tool for the job.
Why submersible instead of surface
A surface pump has to draw water up and can lose prime or struggle with suction if the source is deep or the water is dirty. A submersible pump sits inside the bore, tank, or well and pushes water up instead of pulling it — more reliable for deep sources and far better at handling debris and sediment without clogging.
When you actually need one
- Pumping from a bore or deep well where suction lift isn't reliable.
- Draining a flooded area, dam, or tank with sediment or debris in the water.
- Sewerage or grey water applications where a surface pump would clog quickly.
Power rating and what it means
Higher wattage generally means more lift height and flow rate — a 550W unit handles typical garden and small tank jobs, while 750W+ gives you more head pressure for deeper sources or longer pipe runs. Check the max lift height against your actual depth, not just the wattage number.
Steel construction for dirty water
If the water isn't clean — bore water, sewerage, flood water — look for a steel-bodied pump rather than plastic. It handles abrasive sediment and continuous submersion far better over time.
