Assembling a Giantz boltless steel shelving unit

Boltless Shelving Assembly: Getting Your Racking Square and Solid

Boltless shelving is quick to put up, which is exactly why people rush it and end up with a unit that leans, rocks or won't take its rated load. Ten extra minutes of care gets you a rack that's square, solid and safe for years. Here's the right way to build one.

Start on a level floor

Check the floor where the unit's going before you assemble. A shelf built on an uneven slab will rock no matter how well you put it together. If the floor falls away, pack the low feet with thin packers until the frame sits flat, do this first, not after it's loaded.

Build it square from the base up

Assemble the bottom frame and get it square before adding shelves, measure corner to corner both ways; equal diagonals means square. Every shelf you add locks that shape in, so a base that's out stays out. Tap connectors fully home with a rubber mallet, not a steel hammer that'll deform them.

Space the shelves before you commit

Plan your shelf heights around what's going on them, a couple of tall gaps for bulky gear, tighter spacing where you want more levels. It's a two-minute rethink now versus pulling shelves apart later once it's loaded.

Anchor it to the wall

A tall unit loaded high can tip, especially if someone leans on it or pulls from an upper shelf. Fix the top back to the wall with a bracket, it's the single most important step for safety and it takes minutes. In a double run, brace units back to back instead.

Before you load it

  • Push down on each corner no rock means you're square and level.
  • Check every connector is fully seated, not half-clipped.
  • Confirm the wall anchor is fixed into something solid, not just plasterboard.
  • Load low-to-high so the unit settles evenly as you go.
